Taligent has created a new kind of system software: the CommonPoint(tm)
application system. Portable across multiple host operating systems and capable
of interoperating with applications running on those systems, the CommonPoint
system provides robust support for distributed computing and a user environment
designed for people working together over a network. CommonPoint application developers
develop software by using either host development tools or tools in the
CommonPoint Developer Series. The CommonPoint Developer Series includes the
cpProfessional(tm) development environment for prototyping and development and
the cpConstructor(tm) user interface builder for creating user interface
elements.* All CommonPoint Developer Series tools are capable of running on any
CommonPoint host.
* During development and in early product literature, the CommonPoint application
system, cpProfessional development environment, and cpConstructor user interface
builder were known as the Taligent Application Environment (TalÆ(tm)),
Taligent Development Environment (TalDE(tm)), and Taligent User Interface
Builder, respectively.
Figure 2 shows some of the host operating systems that can support the
CommonPoint system and the CommonPoint Developer Series. Taligent has also been
developing a set of OS technologies, called Taligent Object Services (TalOS(tm)),
optimized for hosting the CommonPoint system and portable across multiple
hardware platforms. Taligent plans to make these technologies available to its
investors and other licensees.
